New Beginnings- Children and Young People’s Campaign

Many people think that domestic abuse affects only adults, yet in nine out of ten cases, children are present in the same or next room while violence is going on.

At least 750,000 children a year witness domestic abuse. (Dept. Of health, 2002)

Effects of Domestic Abuse on children & young people

Children and young people can experience both short and long term cognitive, behavioural and emotional effects as a result of witnessing and being a victim to domestic or sexual abuse.

The very young may suffer physical signs of distress such as bedwetting, stomach aches, being easily startled and disturbed sleep.

Older children can become withdrawn, have problems at school, lowered sense of self worth, nightmares or flashbacks, beginning to self harm, eating disorders, misusing drugs or alcohol and may become anxious or depressed. All ages may have temper tantrums.

Children may also feel angry, guilty, insecure, alone, frightened, powerless or confused.

With your help we can provide:

  • A computer room and play facilities
  • Practical and emotional support
  • Safe, fun play sessions, creative or therapeutic times
  • The chance to be a child
